founder's note

I come to this work as a practitioner. And before that, as someone who needed this to save himself.

In 2022, at the tail end of the pandemic lockdown, I went through a period where I thought I had adult ADHD, but it turned out to be mild depression and anxiety. The kind that does not announce itself dramatically, yet is a constant presence of cloudiness above your head. That was the diagnosis by a kind, patient clinical psychologist from the Mentari Malaysia centre after a 3-hour session. I was lucky that no other patients were scheduled at the time.

What helped me find my way back was a contemplative practice I had been sitting with on and off, as skilfully as a raw beginner could get. Vipassana meditation, rooted in the Dhamma teachings, gave me a way to be with what was happening inside me without being consumed by it. From that steadiness, I started reaching out. I started asking friends how they were. I sent voice notes on how to breathe. I held space, and in holding space for others, I kept finding my own.

The more I share, the more I remember who I am. That is still true today.

I am not a therapist. I am what practitioners in my field call a person with lived experience (PWLE). Someone whose understanding of this work was forged from the inside, not only from the outside. The frameworks I draw from are evidence-based and rigorously researched. The reason I trust them is that I have used them on myself, in the dark, informing each module that I have since designed.

Rumah Empati exists because I believe this kind of knowing should be more accessible.

We serve individuals, leaders, organisations, and communities who are ready to do the inside work. We offer training, coaching, consultation, and retreats, all rooted in the same question: what does it look like to relate with more compassion, more clarity, and more honesty?

You don’t have to arrive ready. You just have to arrive.

Take off your shoes. You’re home too.

what we believe

Empathy is not a soft skill. It is the infrastructure of every relationship, team, and institution that functions authentically.

Most people already carry the wisdom they need. The work is learning to trust it.

Real change moves from the inside out. No programme, no matter how well designed, skips that step.

This work is for everyone. Neither only those in crisis, nor only those in leadership. It is for anyone willing to look honestly at how they show up.

We do not separate the personal from the professional. How you relate at home is how you lead at work. Your inner world is in the same body.

what we're building

Rumah Empati is building toward a Southeast Asia where socio-emotional and ethical education is not a luxury offering for the few, but a living practice woven into workplaces, schools, families, and communities.

We draw from the most rigorous evidence-based frameworks in the world. We root them in the wisdom traditions of this land. And we design everything to be practiced, not just understood.

We are still growing. Intentionally, organically, and in the right company.
